People who have memorized the Qur’aan should be known by the night when people are sleeping and he is awake, and by the morning when people are not fasting but he is, by his sadness when they are happy, by his crying when they are laughing, by his silence when they are slandering, and by his piety and humility when they are arrogant. He who has memorized the Qur’aan should be tearful, sad, wise, patient, and clam, and he should not be rude, inattentive, loud or cruel.

Don’t let the fear of the time it will take to finish the memorization of the Quran stop you from beginning and making the conviction to finish. The time will pass anyway, why not spend it in the best possible way. What better way to spend your time do you have than in the learning and memorization of the Quran?

Reciting Quran in Salah

Reciting Quran is itself a great act of ibadah. So too is performing Salah. So how much better then to combine these two deeds? And there is no better time or situation in which to recite Quran than whilst engaged in making Salah. If you recite only a half a page to a page during each raka’ah of Salah, then you could easily complete an entire Juz during the course of the day.

Do not scatter the (recitation of) Qur’an out like the scattering of sand, and do not rush through it like the hasty recitation of poetry. Stop at its amazing parts and make your heart move with it. None of you should let his concern be to reach the end of the chapter.

Ibn Mas’ood (radiallahu anhu)

O son of Adam, how is your heart ever going to be softened by the recitation of Qur’an when all you read for is to reach the end of the Surah.

Hasan Al Basri

If our hearts were truly pure, we would never get enough of the Words of our Lord, and I hate that one day passes with me not looking in the Mushaf.

Uthman bin Affan (رضي الله عنه[‘al-Bidayah wan-Nihayah’; 7/215]

The Qur’aan is not just there to be recited, but to be acted upon as well. And no one has more of a duty to act according to the Qur’aan than those who carry it in their chests.

شكوت إلى وكيع سوء حفظي فأرشدني إلى ترك المعاصي وأخبرني بأن العلم نور ونور الله لا يهدى لعاصي

I complained to Wakee’ about my poor memory

So he advised me to leave off sinning

And informed me that knowledge is a light

And that the light of Allah is not bestowed upon a sinner

Ask Allah to make you love the Quran.

Because the more you love the Quran, the more often you will recite it and/or listen to its recitation.

And the more you recite the Quran and listen to its recitation, the more Quran you will memorize and retain in your memory, in sha Allah.

The best part of loving the Quran is that memorizing it will not seem like a chore, and you will enjoy the process.
